Open the RAMS for the job you mobilise on Monday and check the site address. On a lot of sites it is the address of the last job, because the document was copied, renamed and emailed to the client before anyone read past the front sheet. Construction health and safety software is sold to stop that happening: a system that produces, version-controls, signs and stores a contractor’s safety documentation and site workflows, from risk assessments and method statements through to inductions, inspections and the CDM 2015 paperwork trail.

Most of the platforms sold under that name do the storing and the signing. Very few do the writing. And the writing is where the hours go.

What construction health and safety software covers

Three jobs, roughly. It produces and version-controls documents, with a record of who signed which revision. It runs field workflows on a phone: inductions, daily plant checks, inspections, near-miss reports. And it evidences compliance, which is a polite way of saying it is what you hand over when an inspector asks how you knew the gang understood the method.

The third job is the one that gets tested. Not whether a document existed, but whether the current revision reached the people doing the work. Picture the way that fails. The method statement is revised on Tuesday afternoon after a services strike, the new revision is uploaded that evening, and the only briefing record on file is dated the previous Thursday against revision B. The document set looks complete. The briefing record does not match the revision the gang worked to.

A platform can handle inspections beautifully and still leave your RAMS drafting in Word. If it does, your bottleneck has not moved an inch. RAMS and method statement production is usually the biggest single documentation time-sink in the whole workflow, and because it needs a competent person’s judgement rather than an administrator’s, it is the job that ends up being done at nine in the evening by the one supervisor who knows the sequence.

Is a generic EHS system enough?

Depends what you build. Generic health and safety software, sold variously as safety management or EHS software, is written for every industry at once. It is strong on incident logging and training records. It has no idea what a POWRA is. Construction-specific systems are built around the CDM 2015 document set and the way a site runs, with permits and plant checks in the model from the start. If you are a construction or demolition contractor, a generic EHS platform will tidy up your incident statistics and leave your daily paperwork exactly where it was.

Where does AI change the safety paperwork?

At the drafting end, mostly. A system with four years of your own RAMS behind it can produce a structured first draft for a new work package that reads like your methods rather than a template someone bought in 2019. It can cross-check that draft against itself, flagging where the method statement contradicts the risk assessment, or where a control named in the RAMS never turns up in the briefing record. It can take a site diary or an inspection note by voice, which is the difference between a record made at the gate and a record reconstructed on Friday afternoon. And it can assemble the pre-start pack, then tell you the F10 is missing before the gang arrive rather than after.

How to test a platform before you sign

Bring your own work package to the demo. Ask the vendor to generate the RAMS for it while you watch, then read what comes out the way you would read a graduate’s first attempt. Is this a review job or a rewrite job? That answer is worth a fortnight of feature comparisons.

Then chase the sign-off trail backwards. Pick an operative and a date, and see whether the system can show you which revision they were briefed on. Test the mobile app outdoors, in gloves, with no signal. A POWRA that takes ten minutes on a small screen gets filled in at the end of the shift, and a POWRA filled in at the end of the shift is worse than no POWRA at all, because now you hold a record asserting that a check happened before work started.

Ask where your existing documents go, too. Years of RAMS and incident history are an asset, both for continuity when a safety manager leaves and as the material that makes AI-assisted drafting sound like your business rather than someone else’s.

What is the best construction health and safety software?

Depends where your hours go. If document production is the bottleneck, a field-capture app will not help you. If your inspections never get done, a document engine will not either. Work out which half is costing you before you shortlist anything.

Do small contractors need H&S software?

Legally, no. CDM 2015 requires the arrangements and the documents, not any particular tool, and a two-site builder with a tidy shared drive can comply perfectly well. It gets hard at the point where you are running five concurrent sites and someone asks you to prove, six months later, which revision was briefed on which morning.

Can AI write a RAMS?

It can draft one. It cannot be responsible for one. A competent person reads it, amends what is wrong and signs it, exactly as they would with a junior colleague’s draft.

Does health and safety software cover CDM 2015 duties?

It supports them. It does not discharge them. Duties sit with the duty holders named in the regulations; what the software gives you is dated evidence that the plan existed and the briefing happened.

So the question in the title usually has an answer, and the answer is documents. Filing systems are cheap and the market is full of them. What is scarce is a reliable way of producing a correct, site-specific RAMS on the Friday before a Monday start, without your best supervisor writing it after his kids have gone to bed.
